Adelaide CBD Expands Youth Sports Access Through New Community Funding Programs

The City of Adelaide maintains over 207 hectares of sporting open space in its Park Lands, where free netball, basketball and tennis courts support youth participation alongside programs such as All Abilities Pickleball operating weekly in the Adelaide CBD.
This focus on accessible community sport matters because activity rates often decline for teens aged 12 to 15 during the transition to high school, prompting targeted local responses that keep young people engaged through inclusive options rather than relying solely on organised club structures.
Parklands and CBD venues driving participation
Relaxed social soccer matches occur every Saturday afternoon in the South Parklands, while the South Australian Disc Golf Club runs sessions in the same green spaces. Jungle Sports runs multi-sport sessions for children aged 18 months to 12 years across multiple sites, and the Adelaide Indoor Sports Centre at Kidman Park provides indoor programs in soccer, futsal, netball and cricket. Urban Rec is introducing individual sign-ups for social sports near Hutt Street, allowing flexible entry without full-season commitments.
Funding supporting inclusive growth
The South Australian government awarded $5.6 million to 31 grassroots sports projects in 2024-25, directing a significant portion toward youth engagement and inclusive programs for neurodivergent children. The $2.4 million Active State program forms part of these efforts, specifically addressing disengaged teens and kids aged 12-15. All Abilities Pickleball remains a free weekly offering in the Adelaide CBD that emphasises skill development and social doubles play in a welcoming setting for participants of all abilities.
Families can explore come-and-try sessions through existing multi-sport providers or book courts in the Park Lands for informal play. The Adelaide International Kids’ Day scheduled for 2026 at Pinky Flat will add further family activities centred on tennis and related youth programs.
