Grassroots Programs Expand Free Weekly Youth Sports Across Adelaide CBD
Free weekly sessions and targeted funding support skill-building and social play for local teens.
How we reported this
All Abilities Pickleball runs as a free inclusive program each week inside the Adelaide CBD, giving young participants structured skill development alongside social doubles matches.
Local programs anchor participation
The City of Adelaide supports youth-focused work through the Active State program. Youth Night @The Lights adds a monthly multi-sport option with basketball, volleyball, pickleball and soccer for ages 12-17, though the event takes place in Lightsview. Relaxed Saturday afternoon soccer matches occur near Hutt Street and South Terrace in the Adelaide CBD Parklands, with lawn bowls and disc golf also available in the same green space.
Funding underpins facility upgrades
A $5.6 million State Government grant under the 2024-25 CRSFP is directing resources to 31 grassroots sports facilities across South Australia. Nearly 15 per cent of that allocation supports cricket, while the remainder includes significant funding for youth engagement programs. The City of Adelaide separately allocates $2.4 million to the Active State program, which targets disengaged teens aged 12-15 who show declining activity rates.
