Adelaide CBD Launches Smart Sensors for Parking, Lighting, Data Networks

More than 2,800 in-ground parking sensors now feed real-time data into the UPark and Park Adelaide app, giving drivers instant bay availability and remote payment options across the CBD. These sensors form part of a larger push that also includes over 60 sensor-driven LED lights on Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square.
The Adelaide City Deal, valued at $551 million, channels $10 million from the Australian Government and up to $12.6 million from the City of Adelaide into smart infrastructure. That funding links directly to the Ten Gigabit Adelaide 10Gbps fibre network, which supplies the bandwidth needed for additional devices and services.
Multi-Function Poles and Movement Data
Multi-Function Poles already combine WiFi access points with IoT sensors. The network supports trials of smart city services in the CBD and North Adelaide, where 60 people-movement sensors are installed. These poles sit at the centre of plans to add further environmental and traffic monitoring without new pole installations.
The Cisco Adelaide Smart City Studio runs under the global Lighthouse City program. It coordinates pilots in smart lighting, parking, environmental monitoring and people-movement technologies. Data from the existing 60 movement sensors and the parking network now flows through the same studio platform, allowing operators to test how additional sensors could layer onto the current setup.
Next Integration Steps
City officials continue to link the parking sensors, LED lighting controls and Multi-Function Poles to the shared fibre backbone. This approach avoids separate networks for each service and keeps maintenance costs lower as new tools are added.
Residents and businesses can already use the UPark app for parking and can expect the same interface to handle future lighting or wayfinding features once the trials confirm stable performance. The Cisco studio team monitors energy use on Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square to measure savings before any wider rollout of on-demand lighting.
Further sensor additions will rely on the same 10Gbps connections already in place, keeping new installations compatible with existing equipment. City documentation lists ongoing evaluation of these pilots as the immediate priority before any larger-scale purchases or deployments.
