Data remains the primary currency for municipal management in the CBD. Currently, the city operates a sophisticated network of over 2,800 in-ground parking sensors that feed directly into the UPark app. This system allows drivers to monitor real-time availability and extend parking sessions remotely. Beyond parking, the city’s footprint of 60-plus pedestrian movement sensors works in tandem with a spatial technology portal and an Economic Insights Dashboard, providing the data architecture necessary for evidence-based decision-making.
Energy conservation efforts are also becoming increasingly automated. Along Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square, more than 60 street lights have been retrofitted with sensor-driven LED technology developed by Cisco and Sensity. This move toward intelligent lighting is a cornerstone of the broader effort to maintain the city’s environmental commitments while reducing operational overhead.
Connectivity and Future Scaling
The backbone of these smart initiatives, the Ten Gigabit Adelaide project, provides a 10Gbps fibre optic network designed to facilitate high-speed data sharing. This infrastructure is now being utilized to expand and upgrade free public WiFi across the CBD, moving beyond initial pilot phases toward a more stable and high-capacity public utility. The project acts as the digital engine for the Lot Fourteen innovation precinct, ensuring that high-bandwidth capabilities are available for local firms and research bodies.
