Adelaide CBD Reveals 5 Best Free Outdoor Gyms and Fitness Circuits
From Hindmarsh Square to the River Torrens, locals are discovering top spots for a cost-free workout in the heart of the city.
How we reported this

Hindmarsh Square has become a magnet for fitness enthusiasts this winter, as more locals swap pricey studio memberships for free outdoor gyms dotted across Adelaide’s city centre.
The surge in outdoor exercise comes as cost-of-living pressures tighten household budgets and the city’s wellbeing culture continues to thrive. With house prices cresting historic highs and the average gym membership in Adelaide CBD running $17 to $22 per week, many are scouting free fitness options close to home and work. The city council’s investment in public health infrastructure over the past five years is paying off, with well-equipped open-air facilities now accessible in several central parks.
Open-Air Fitness Hubs in the Heart of the City
Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga and Hindmarsh Square/Mukata both boast dedicated outdoor gym areas, drawing mid-morning joggers and early evening commuters alike. At Victoria Square, along the southeastern lawns, you’ll find a suite of bodyweight equipment: pull-up bars, sit-up benches, chest presses and leg raises, all with a sweeping view of the heritage Supreme Court building. There’s no need for keycards or sign-ups here-adults and teens simply turn up and train, all hours, seven days a week.
Just four blocks north, Hindmarsh Square has signed walking and running loops alongside a cluster of resistance machines and step-up platforms. The City of Adelaide’s Park Lands Trail also weaves through the square and connects fitness-seekers to nearby Rymill Park, where a newly resurfaced 1.6-kilometre circuit track and a modest calisthenics station await on Bartels Road, adjacent to the pop-up community cafe. According to council records, the Hindmarsh Square gym recorded an average of 85 daily users in May 2026, up 13 percent since January.
Fitness for Every Level and Schedule
For runners, the River Torrens/Karrawirra Parri Linear Park trail remains a favourite. At the central Elder Park section, several new mobility stations-designed in collaboration with SA Water-have popped up, offering QR-coded instructions for strength circuits and stretching, as well as water refill points and shaded seating for cooldowns. These additions form part of the council’s $1.2 million Wellbeing in the City program launched in late 2025, which also supports monthly pop-up fitness sessions led by Adelaide Active, a nonprofit group that ran 28 free community workouts in CBD parks last financial year.
The low barrier to entry is a key draw. Data from Adelaide City Council shows public park gym visits in the CBD have increased by 21 percent year-on-year, with an estimated 102,500 workouts logged in 2025 alone. Council maintenance costs are modest-less than $8,500 annually for repairs and cleaning across the main CBD outdoor gym stations.
City staff have installed clear signage and online maps to make navigation easier. At Rundle Park on East Terrace, a new routine card system gives beginners sample circuits: for instance, a 20-minute loop includes two sets each of incline push-ups, monkey bar swings, and box jumps, matched with a 500-metre jog around the sports fields. Fitness professionals from local studios including Fitness on Pirie periodically lead free Saturday bootcamps or yoga sessions in Rymill and Hindmarsh squares. Registration is through the official Adelaide City What’s On calendar, but casual use is always drop-in and free.
If you’re considering trying one of these outdoor gyms, pack a towel, a refillable water bottle, and some sunscreen-even in July, the UV index here can push 3 by midday. The city’s free fitness facilities are open year-round, with peak usage before 9am and after 5pm on weekdays. For a full map, visit the City of Adelaide’s Park Lands website or check the interactive guides posted beside all major gym zones. As always, residents should consult a local GP before starting a new workout routine, especially if living with chronic conditions.
